Detective Joseph Essington was struck and killed by a train in the South Anderson Yards in Anderson.

He accidentally stepped into the path of a switch engine that was in reverse with numerous cars. He had been patrolling on foot and may not have heard the engine due to the noise in the yards. His body was found by a railroad employee later that morning.

Detective Essington, from Anderson, was survived by his wife, daughter, two brothers, sister and mother.

The responsibilities of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Police Department (1889–1930) are now under the jurisdiction of the CSX Transportation Railroad Police Department.
