   Trooper Roy Jones was killed in a single-vehicle accident while responding to assist the Markleville town marshal and a Madison County sheriff's deputy who had stopped a vehicle they had pursued after running a stop sign.

   He was traveling eastbound on State Road 38 with lights and siren when another car pulled out in front of him on a curve. He swerved to avoid a collision and struck a tree, killing him instantly of massive injuries.

   Trooper Jones, from Lapel, was assigned to the Pendleton post. He was survived by his wife, daughter, three sons, parents, sister and brother.

• In 2019, U.S. 36 between State Road 9 and the Madison and Henry County line was dedicated the Trooper Roy E. Jones Memorial Highway in his honor.
