Officer George Stillman died from shotgun wounds he suffered six days earlier when he responded to a domestic disturbance.

Upon his arrival at the home of the 67-year-old estranged wife, Officer Stillman was shot in the stomach with a shotgun by the husband who had already killed her. The couple had attended a court hearing on their divorce proceedings earlier in the day.

The man had also shot and wounded his 26-year-old stepdaughter and had fired at a vehicle occupied by small children.

Officer Stillman was taken to Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford where he died from his wounds six days later.

The 89-year-old suspect was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the barn on his son's farm nearby.

Officer Stillman was survived by his wife.

Historical Note

• The 89-year-old offender is the oldest known to be involved in a line of duty death in Indiana.
