Captain Alfred Drabenstot suffered a heart attack at the scene of a medical emergency at the Salamonie Reservoir.

While assisting an ambulance crew who had responded for a water skier injured in an accident, he became ill.

He was subsequently transported to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne where he died the following day.

Captain Drabenstot, from Huntington, had previously been appointed sheriff to serve the remaining 21 months of the second, four-year term of Sheriff Dale Rudicel who resigned while in office in March 1977.
