Deputy Sheriff Fred Certain died from gunshot wounds suffered four days earlier while attempting to arrest a subject who had killed Grant County Constable Frank Ury earlier in the day.

Constable Ury was attempting to serve a writ of ejectment on a man for non-payment of $50 worth of rent when he was shot and killed.

The 67-year-old man then barricaded himself inside his home and opened fire on responding deputies, fatally wounding Deputy Certain. He was later convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Deputy Certain was survived by his wife.
