Officer Kenneth Stiverson was shot and killed by a former patient at the Richmond State Hospital who had commandeered a public transit bus.

After the man had beaten the driver, he then exited the bus and while walking away spotted Officer Stiverson and his partner who were in a city ambulance. He threw a brick, breaking their windshield, and ordered them out of the vehicle.

The 34-year-old mentally ill subject then killed Officer Stiverson with a shot to his back before wounding his partner with three shots. His partner was able to return fire, striking the suspect in the head, killing him.

Officer Stiverson was transported to Parkview Memorial Hospital where he died a half-hour later.

Officer Stiverson was survived by his wife, daughter, five sons including twin 2-month-old infants, mother, sister and brother.

In memory of his service, Officer Stiverson's badge number, 154, was adopted by the Fort Wayne Police Department and Allen County Sheriff's Department as their radio signal for an officer needing assistance.
