Patrolman George Lowe was shot and killed as he was sitting in a fellow officer's car while off duty with two other subjects within sight of the police station.

As the officers were talking to a citizen, a car containing numerous subjects pulled along side them and one male fired four shots from an open window. Patrolman Lowe was fatally shot in the chest and the other officer was wounded by flying glass.

Patrolman Lowe was taken to Methodist Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Five men, 20- and 21-year-old members of a gang, were apprehended and indicted for first-degree murder and aggravated assault. The 21-year-old shooter was subsequently convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 15 to 25 years in prison.

Two offenders had their charges dismissed after being witnesses for the state. It was believed the officers were ambushed due to a previous incident between Patrolman Lowe and one of the gang members.

Patrolman Lowe was survived by his wife, son, parents, three sisters and four brothers.
