Sergeant William Paterson was killed in an automobile accident during a high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle from Hamlet.

The 14-year-old male driver, who had walked away from a substance abuse center in Starke County the day before, was also killed. The two juvenile passengers were not injured in the accident.

Sergeant Paterson was survived by his wife and children. One of his sons currently serves as chief deputy with the department.
