   Marshal Charles Chapman was accidentally shot and killed by a state trooper who was preparing to clean his service weapon in the Munster police station.

   The .38-caliber revolver discharged, striking Marshal Chapman in the chest. The state trooper was exonerated of blame in the shooting.

   Marshal Chapman had previously served with the Lake County Sheriff's Department for three years. He was survived by his wife, 2- and 4-year-old sons and parents.
