Incident Details
Cause of Death:Corporal Brandon Schreiber died from gunshot wounds he received 10 days earlier while assisting deputies with the Iroquois County Sheriff's Department in Illinois.
They were involved in a vehicle pursuit of an armed, suicidal subject who had taken his wife hostage. Corporal Schreiber joined the pursuit as it entered Indiana, which then returned into Illinois on U.S. 24.
The suspect was involved in a slow-speed accident in Sheldon and refused to exit his vehicle. After being surrounded by officers, he produced a revolver and exchanged gunfire when Corporal Schreiber was struck once in the head.
Corporal Schreiber was transported to Iroquois Memorial Hospital in Watseka before being flown to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana where he remained until he died from his wounds 10 days later and his organs were donated.
The 37-year-old male suspect was killed by another deputy and died at the scene where his reportedly kidnapped wife was not found inside his vehicle.
Corporal Schreiber, from Kentland, had also served as a deputy marshal with the Morocco Town Marshal's Office and as a volunteer firefighter with the Kentland-Jefferson Township Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Kaitlin (née Nichols); children, Seth and Paisley; mother, Lorraine (née Gynn); sisters, Ashley (Adam) Schweller, Maryjane (Brandon) Manno and Phoenix Schreiber; grandfather, Vernon Schreiber; and grandmother, Katherine Gynn.
