Acting Chief of Police Robert Randolph was shot and killed while attempting to arrest an intoxicated man.

He had ordered the subject to go home earlier in the day and while riding with the police chief, who was off-duty and on leave due to an injury, he again observed the man staggering while walking in the street.

As the suspect was being placing under arrest and searched, he produced a handgun and suddenly fired three times. Acting Chief Randolph was struck in the leg and died three hours later at his residence.

The 33-year-old man was struck in the head by return gunfire and killed.

Acting Chief of Police Randolph was survived by his wife and son.
