Town Marshal William Lacey suffered a fatal heart attack while assisting to arrest a subject for intoxication.

As a deputy marshal was engaged in a struggle to arrest a man, Marshal Lacey came to assist him. The struggle continued and blows were exchanged with one striking Marshal Lacey directly over the heart.

The officers were able to subdue the 19-year-old man and take him to the town jail. About 30 minutes later, Marshal Lacey complained of being exhausted, began walking to his residence and about three or blocks from his home, he collapsed and died.

Town Marshal Lacey was survived by his wife, son, two daughters, three brothers and sister.

Historical Note

Town marshals were elected to unlimited, two-year terms until 1917 when state law was amended to require they be appointed to office by the trustees of the town board.
