   Night Watchman William Smith was killed after apparently having been struck by a vehicle as he was walking in the downtown area while on duty.

   His body was found by a passing motorist laying in the street about 150 feet north from his hat and flashlight.

   A nearby physician was summoned but Night Watchman Smith never regained consciousness and died of a fractured skull and pulmonary hemorrhage.

   The driver who struck him and fled the scene was never located.

   Night Watchman Smith was single and survived by his mother, two brothers and two sisters.
