Town Marshal Charles Connaughton suffered a fatal heart attack while attempting to arrest an intoxicated man.

The subject had been causing a disturbance at a dance in town and was placed under arrest. As Marshal Connaughton was riding on the running board of the subject's automobile, he collapsed and fell to the pavement near St. Peter's Church.

The 28-year-old man was charged with intoxication and driving while intoxicated. He later pleaded guilty to both charges and was sentenced to three months in jail and accessed a fine of $110.

Town Marshal Connaughton was survived by his wife, daughter and five sons.

The responsibilities of the Montgomery Town Marshal's Office are now under the jurisdiction of the Daviess County Sheriff's Department.
