   Special Deputy Sheriff Charles McKinney was shot and killed during an attempted robbery in front of the Alain L. Locke Elementary School in Gary.

   As he was in plainclothes outside the school, two subjects approached him on foot before one man shot him once in the head. Special Deputy McKinney was pronounced dead at the scene.

   The suspects entered a nearby vehicle and drove away after taking his service weapon and wallet, and have never been apprehended.

   Special Deputy Sheriff McKinney, from Gary, had served as a security officer with the Gary Community School Corporation and was survived by his wife.
