Auxiliary Officer Arthur Reifeis died one week after being struck by a car while directing traffic near Butler Fieldhouse during the afternoon basketball sectional tournament.

He was transported to Indianapolis General Hospital where he died 10 days later after suffering a broken leg, concussion and a fractured skull.

The 65-year-old male driver who struck him was charged with reckless homicide but was later dismissed due to his own death from natural causes a month later.

Auxiliary Officer Reifeis was survived by his wife, four sons and daughter.

The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
