Sergeant Maurice Murphy was shot and killed while he and other officers attempted to arrest a wanted suspect.

In the afternoon, two detectives had located the man in an alley, exchanged gunfire with him and called for assistance.

When Sergeant Murphy and three other officers responded, they were under fire when confronted by the suspect in a rear yard.

The man fired twice, striking Sergeant Murphy in the abdomen and left hand. He was transported to City Hospital where he died about an hour later.

The 30-year-old suspect, who was wanted on charges of burglary and grand larceny, was shot and killed by another officer.

Sergeant Murphy was survived by his wife and 7-year-old daughter.

The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
