Officer Marion Ellis died from injuries he suffered 11 days earlier when he fell down a flight of stairs at the Polar Ice and Fuel Company.

As he and his partner entered the building in the evening, Officer Ellis opened a door he thought led to an office and fell down a staircase leading to the basement.

He was taken to City Hospital suffering from a skull fracture and died 11 days later at his home.

Officer Ellis was survived by his wife and 13-year-old daughter.

The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
