Trooper Richard England was killed in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 33 about one mile south of Kimmell.

He was transporting a 21-year-old Army deserter, who was stationed at the Baer Army Air Base in Fort Wayne, to Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis from the Ligonier post.

Trooper England attempted to pass a southbound vehicle, driven by an 18-year-old male with six students from Cromwell High School, when it turned in front of him causing his vehicle to overturn and strike a tree.

He was transported to Luckey Hospital in Wolf Lake where he died in the afternoon the following day.

Trooper England, from Columbia City, was assigned to the Ligonier post. He was survived by his wife.
