Town Marshal Arnott Cowgill was shot and killed while struggling with an intoxicated man.

He had gone into the State Bank of Wolcott when the subject entered the bank. He waited outside for the man to finish his transaction before advising him to go home.

Marshal Cowgill was struck by the suspect in the face with his fist before he pulled out an automatic revolver and shot him six times. He was carried to a local doctor's office where he died a few minutes later.

The 56-year-old suspect was taken into custody by the night marshal shortly thereafter. He was later found guilty of second-degree murder by a jury and sentenced to life in prison where he died in 1946.

Town Marshal Cowgill was survived by his wife, daughter, two sons and mother.
