Correctional Officer Aaron Schoffstall died when he fell over a rail of the Wabash River Bridge on State Road 63.

   He and a deputy sheriff were riding to work in uniform when they stopped at the scene of an accident that occurred in the snowy road conditions.

   While investigating that accident another occurred on the icy pavement and he fell over 33 feet from the bridge deck to avoid being hit by the vehicle.

   Due to confusion in which deputies thought Correctional Officer Schoffstall had been taken from the scene to work by another deputy, his body was not found until they returned to the bridge over two hours later.

   Correctional Officer Schoffstall, from West Terre Haute, was survived by his wife, 5-year-old daughter, brother and parents.
