Patrolman Wayne Jones died from injuries he suffered four days earlier after being involved in a two-vehicle accident.

He and his partner were en route to a call in which a construction lantern had fallen into a gas main excavation and caused an explosion.

They were traveling east on Washington Avenue when their squad car collided with a fire department vehicle who was responding southbound on 19th Street.

Captain Richard J. Gray, 54, who had served for 30 years with the Terre Haute Fire Department and was an occupant in the other vehicle, also died at the scene. The patrolman driving the squad car and the fire chief were seriously injured.
