Patrolman Herman Harms was shot and killed near the Wabash Avenue River Bridge.

While on foot patrol near the Sparks Milling Company, he was shot three times by a male subject who then fled the area.

The man was arrested two months later and charged with a robbery of the Pearl Jett barber shop a couple blocks away the same evening that Patrolman Harms was killed.

The 23-year-old offender was later found guilty of robbery by a jury, fined $5,000 and sentenced to 10 to 21 years in prison.

Patrolman Harms had previously served as a deputy with the Vigo County Sheriff's Department. He was survived by his wife.
