Cause of Death:Patrolman Jack Osborne was killed when he was struck by an intoxicated driver.
He was assisting an Indiana state trooper at an accident scene and was inspecting a damaged guardrail. A drunken driver struck the rear of his patrol car, which had been parked on the shoulder with its emergency lights activated, shoving it into the guardrail.
Another southbound vehicle then collided with the impaired driver's vehicle as it rested partially in the roadway. Patrolman Osborne was struck during the second collision and carried over 80 feet by the second vehicle.
He was transported to Jackson County Schneck Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The 26-year-old drunken driver pleaded guilty to operating while intoxicated causing death and was sentenced to two years probation, 2,600 hours of community service and court costs. The 53-year-old male driver of the second vehicle was not charged.
Patrolman Osborne had previously served as an officer with the Jefferson County Police Department in Kentucky. He was survived by his wife, parents, brother and sisters.
