Incident Details
Cause of Death:Patrolman George Little and Patrolman Elmer Stephenson were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect for being intoxicated in public at the Pennsylvania Railroad Depot freight office.
The officers were unaware that the suspect had just attempted to kill his boss. When the officers arrived they were both shot. Although mortally wounded, Patrolman Little and a railroad employee were able to subdue the suspect.
Five days later the 35-year-old suspect pleaded guilty to two counts of murder. He was sentenced to life in prison but was paroled in 1954 and died two years later.
Patrolman Little was survived by his wife.

Historic Place The Pennsylvania Railroad Depot, at 930 North E Street in Richmond, was built in 1902 and is a contributing building within the Richmond Railroad Station Historic District, developed between 1853 and 1915, and roughly bounded by the Norfolk Southern Railway tracks, North Tenth Street, Elm Place, North D Street and Fort Wayne Avenue. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 8, 1987 and listed on the Indiana Register of Historic Sites and Structures on July 23, 1987. |
