Cause of Death:Officer Gregg Winters died from gunshot wounds he suffered 11 days earlier after being shot while transporting a prisoner to the county jail.
He had been dispatched to a traffic accident and arrested the subject for public intoxication. The prisoner was placed in the rear seat of his squad car after being searched by another officer.
Approximately one-eighth mile from the jail, the handcuffed prisoner was able to pull out a concealed semi-automatic handgun and shot Officer Winters in the back of the head and neck five times.
He died from his injuries 11 days later at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
The 20-year-old suspect was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to death. On June 15, 2007, he was executed by lethal injection at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City.
Officer Winters was survived by his wife, two sons, two brothers, one who retired as deputy chief with the Muncie Police Department, parents and maternal grandmother.
