   Officer Craig Herbert was killed when his patrol car was struck by a suspect's vehicle during a pursuit.

   The driver of the fleeing van was traveling at about 100 mph when he crossed over a set of railroad tracks, lost control and broadsided Officer Herbert's patrol car.

   The 15-year-old suspect fled the scene on foot but was apprehended a short time later and charged with resisting law enforcement. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and discharged in 2011.

   Officer Herbert had previously served with the Fortville Police Department. He was survived by his wife and 10- and 11-year-old sons.
