Reserve Deputy Sheriff Tracy Miles was struck and killed by a motorhome while talking to a motorist on the side of Interstate 65 near the 96-mile marker.

While patrolling the highway, he stopped to place a tow notice on an abandoned vehicle but observed two individuals attaching a tow rope to it on his return patrol. He stopped again, asked the driver for identification, and was standing next to the door of the vehicle.

As a northbound motorhome approached Reserve Deputy Miles was able to push the driver out of the way before being struck himself, saving the driver's life and causing him to suffer only a broken leg. The impact threw Reserve Deputy Miles 126 feet down the roadway and he suffered multiple internal injuries.

The 70-year-old driver of the 19-foot motorhome stopped immediately to offer his assistance and was not charged.

Reserve Deputy Sheriff Miles, from Greenwood, was survived by his wife, 2-year-old son, father, stepmother and two brothers.
