Sheriff William Carver suffered a fatal heart attack while responding to the scene of a fatal fire in Corydon.

He was attending an auction with his wife and father-in-law that was being conducted on his late mother's estate in Laconia.

While there, he was requested at the scene of the fire at the Knights of Pythias Lodge at 213 East Chestnut Street where a 45-year-old male died in his upstairs residence.

As he was driving to the scene, Sheriff Carver began to experience severe chest pains and stopped at his doctor's office, where he collapsed shortly after arriving.

Resuscitative efforts were begun before he was transferred to the adjacent Harrison County Hospital where he suffered another massive heart attack and passed away.

Sheriff Carver, a Republican from Elizabeth, was in the third year of his four-year term in office as the 51st sheriff of Harrison County. He had previously served as the Corydon town marshal for six years and was survived by his wife, daughter, two sons, grandson, father, four sisters and five brothers.
