   Deputy Sheriff Daniel Mayfield was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend six suspects who robbed the Farmers State Bank in Lanesville.

   As the suspects approached New Albany in two vehicles, he and several other officers confronted them near the Stone Bridge over Falling Run Creek when shots were exchanged and Deputy Mayfield was fatally wounded.

   A 38-year-old driver of one of the vehicles was shot as they fled and his body was not found until 11 days later near Rising Sun.

   Deputy Sheriff Mayfield, from New Albany, was survived by his wife, daughter, two sons, five sisters and three brothers.
