Officer Orren Shelmadine was struck and killed by a passenger train while walking north across the tracks at the Main Street crossing.
Witnesses testified that Officer Shelmadine did not hear the westbound train approaching the station due to the noise from a passing eastbound freight train. He was unable to clear the crossing in time and was dragged approximately 300 feet.
Officer Shelmadine was survived by his wife, three daughters, sister and two brothers.
