Lieutenant Russell Baldwin was shot and killed after stopping a man who had just robbed the Grab-It-Here grocery store of $240.

During the traffic stop both men exited their vehicles and spoke for a few moments before the suspect produced a gun and shot Lieutenant Baldwin in the chest. He was transported to Culver Union Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The 31-year-old suspect fled the scene and was pursued when he collided with a vehicle on Interstate 74 near State Road 32 but fled the scene on foot. Two days later, he was apprehended near Lizton after a truck driver noticed a hitchhiker matching the suspect's description had been picked up by a motorist and reported it to authorities.

He was later convicted and sentenced to death for first-degree murder, life in prison for felony murder and 20 years for commission of a felony while armed. Upon appeal, his death sentence was vacated and re-sentenced to life in prison where he died in 2009.

Lieutenant Baldwin was survived by his wife, son, daughter, four brothers and two sisters.
