Incident Details
Cause of Death:Detective Julius Gunther was shot and killed as he and other officers searched an apartment building for a man wanted in a shooting at a nearby pool hall.
He was shot in the chest and transported to Mercy Hospital where he died shortly after his arrival.
The 27-year-old suspect was arrested a week later in Chicago. He was subsequently convicted of murder, sentenced to life in prison in a change of venue to Porter County and paroled in 1933.
Detective Gunther was survived by his wife and 5-, 7- and 9-year-old daughters.
