Patrolman Jacub Manka was shot and killed while walking his beat by a subject in his stocking feet attempting to burglarize a residence.

As he approached him in an alley, the 30-year-old man turned and fired, hitting Patrolman Manka in the chest.

The suspect was shot and killed by Patrolman Manka before he staggered into a tavern next door and collapsed.

He was initially taken to a doctor's office nearby, then to his home where he died from his wound about an hour later.

Patrolman Paul Budich, who was hired as the replacement for Patrolman Manka, was killed in the line of duty less than a quarter-mile away nearly 10 years later.

Patrolman Manka was survived by his wife, 2-year-old son, 8-month-old daughter and mother.
