   Town Marshal Charles Chapman was accidentally shot and killed by a trooper with the Indiana State Police who was preparing to clean his service weapon.

   The .38-caliber revolver discharged in the Munster police station, striking Marshal Chapman in the abdomen. The state trooper was exonerated of blame in the shooting.

   Town Marshal Chapman had previously served with the Lake County Sheriff's Department for three years. He was survived by his wife, 2- and 4-year-old sons and parents.
