   Officer Robert Markley was struck and killed by a drunken driver while directing traffic at the scene of an officer-involved shooting.

   A furniture truck had been hijacked by two men who drove the vehicle into a snow bank before fleeing on foot into Wicker Memorial Park. Officer Markley was struck when a driver entered the area where he was standing.

   Officer Markley was transported to St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond where he died three hours later.

   The 23-year-old male suspect, who was intoxicated, was apprehended but later found not guilty of reckless homicide.

   Officer Markley was survived by his wife, 7-month-old son and parents.
