Officer William Dolby was electrocuted while using a call box to make his hourly report.

As he inserted his key into the call box, it malfunctioned and electrocuted him. His partner ran to him, then notified headquarters from another call box and upon returning, Officer Dolby was dead. The cause of the malfunction was never determined.

Officer Dolby was survived by his wife, son and daughter.

The responsibilities of the Indianapolis Police Department (1854–2006) are now under the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
