Corporal Nick Polizzotto was shot and killed while investigating a report of shots being fired near an unoccupied nightclub in the 1700 block of Lincoln Way East.

He and another officer arrived on the scene and were directed by witnesses to the subject's second-floor room at the Wooden Indian Motel nearby. As they attempted to question him at his door, he produced a pistol and fired 10 shots at both officers.

The other officer was struck in his right shoulder, breaking his collarbone. As Corporal Polizzotto wrestled for the suspect's firearm, he was struck under his arm in an area not protected by his bullet-resistant vest.

Corporal Polizzotto was transported to Memorial Hospital where he died an hour later.

The 45-year-old suspect was shot and killed by the other officer's return gunfire.

Corporal Polizzotto was survived by his 8-year-old son, brother, sister and parents.
