Patrolman Donald Winn died from a gunshot wound he suffered 10 days earlier while he and his partner investigated a burglary at a car dealership.
When the officers found the dealership had been broken into, they entered the building and walked towards the office. The suspects heard the officers approaching and one of them, a 31-year-old male, opened fire and struck Patrolman Winn in the chest.
His partner returned fire and took the suspects into custody. Patrolman Winn was transported to a local hospital where he died from his wound 10 days later.
Both suspects were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. One offender was paroled in 1984, while the other offender was paroled in 1986.
Patrolman Winn was survived by his wife, 7-month-old son and parents. His father had served with the Indiana State Police and retired as a detective.
