Patrolman Anthony Hellis was shot and killed after he and two other officers responded to a domestic disturbance in which a husband was beating his wife.

When they arrived at the residence, the husband fled on foot and was pursued. As the man suddenly turned in an alley and fired, Patrolman Hellis was struck twice in the heart.

He was transported to Home Hospital where he died shortly after his arrival.

The 46-year-old suspect remained at large despite a $1,500 reward until he returned to his estranged wife's home in the early morning hours four days later.

He was found by a newspaper carrier on the front porch with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and the same revolver used to kill Patrolman Hellis was near his body.

Patrolman Hellis was survived by his wife, and 1- and 3-year-old sons.
