Patrolman Howard Kelley died from a gunshot wound suffered over three years earlier after arresting a subject for stealing gasoline.

He was sitting in the rear seat of the patrol car and before his partner got into the vehicle to drive to the police station, the suspect turned and shot Patrolman Kelley once in the head from a sitting position in the front passenger seat.

The 53-year-old male suspect fled the scene but was pursued by the other officer who shot and killed him.

Patrolman Kelley was survived by his wife, stepdaughter, granddaughter, two sisters and two brothers.
